Exhibit list generator

An exhibit list is the index to your evidence: one numbered row per document, so that everybody in the room can say "exhibit 4" and mean the same page. Courts expect one when you file more than a handful of documents, and most self represented people write theirs by hand the night before.

No single form is right everywhere. Numbering, column names and whether exhibits are lettered or numbered come from the rules of the court you are filing in, and often from a form that court publishes. Check the rules or ask the clerk before you file this. What follows is a plain list in the shape most courts use, which is a starting point and not a filing.

The columns, and what belongs in each

Column	What goes in it
No.	The label the exhibit will be referred to by: 1, A, P-1. Whatever your court uses. Keep it short, because it is going to be said out loud.
Description	What the document is, in one line, specific enough that nobody has to open it to know: "Text messages between the parties, 3 to 19 March 2026, 41 messages" beats "text messages".
Date	The date of the document itself, not the date you printed it. For a conversation, the range it covers.
Source	Where it came from: "iPhone 13, iOS 18.4, exported 2026-09-14", "bank statement, downloaded from online banking". This is the column that answers the first question anybody asks about a screenshot.
Notes	Yours to use: page count, the fact that a copy went to the other side, an objection noted at the hearing, or nothing at all.

Questions

Will a court accept this list?

A list is not accepted or refused; the evidence is. What a court expects is that the list matches the bundle: the same numbers, in the same order, with nothing on the list that is not in the bundle and nothing in the bundle that is not on the list. Where a court publishes its own exhibit list form, use that form. Nothing on this page is legal advice.

Numbers or letters?

It depends on the court, and sometimes on which side you are. A common split is numbers for one party and letters for the other, so that "exhibit 3" and "exhibit C" cannot be confused in a transcript. The No. column takes whatever you type, so it follows your rules rather than ours.

What should the description of a text message exhibit say?

Who the conversation is between, what period it covers, how many messages, and what it was produced from. A description that does that survives the question "how do we know this is complete", which is the question a screenshot loses on.

Can I come back and finish it later?

On the same computer and in the same browser, yes: the list is still here when you come back, because it is saved in this browser. It is not saved anywhere else, so it will not be waiting on another machine, and clearing your browsing data clears it.

What is in the CSV?

The five columns and your rows, with the case details as the first lines, so a spreadsheet opens it as a table. Use it to keep a copy, to hand the list to somebody who wants to edit it, or to paste the rows into a form your court publishes.

If the exhibit is a conversation

The row is easy to write and hard to back up: a screenshot shows what was on a screen, and it shows nothing about what came before it or what was deleted. ChatExport is a Windows program that reads an iPhone backup already on your PC and writes the conversation as a PDF, with the photos, the timestamps and a SHA-256 beside the file that the other side can check independently.
