Decipher TextMessage Price, and an Alternative

Decipher TextMessage costs 29.99 USD once, runs on Windows and macOS, reads your messages out of an Apple backup, and comes from a company that says it has been in business since 2010. It is the benchmark this category is priced against, and any page telling you it is bad is selling you something.

So this one will not. Here is what is different, what is the same, and the two situations where the answer is to buy theirs.

What does Decipher TextMessage cost?

29.99 USD, once, checked on 4 August 2026. Not a subscription, and not a renewal.

The licence is generous in a way worth knowing, because it is the opposite of how most software in this category is sold. Their own product page puts it like this:

Each purchase comes with two unique device activations… Software is good for installation on an unlimited amount of computers.

So the limit is on iPhones, not on PCs. If you need to export from two handsets, one purchase covers it.

What does Decipher do, precisely?

It reads an iTunes or Finder backup on your computer rather than talking to the phone. Their own download page is unusually clear about it:

That is the same architecture this program uses, and it is the right one. Your phone stays out of it, nothing has to stay plugged in, and the data comes from a file Apple’s own software wrote rather than from an app negotiating with iOS.

Checked on 4 August 2026, it exports to PDF, CSV, HTML and TXT, and it opens encrypted backups when you know the password. WhatsApp is not part of it; Decipher sells that as a separate product called Decipher Chat.

Against the two programs it shares a shortlist with, the deciding column moves. Decipher TextMessage against TouchCopy is forty dollars and what each licence covers, both bought outright. iMazing against Decipher TextMessage is a subscription against a purchase.

What is genuinely different?

Four things, and they all live in the finished document rather than in the feature list.

The export complete screen with the file path, the size of the file, the export ID and the SHA256

The formal layout. Court View is a separate document style, picked at export: no chat bubbles, message numbers down the margin so a specific line can be cited as “#412” instead of “about two thirds down page 19”, full timestamps to the second on every message, and raw phone numbers printed next to contact names. It is designed to be filed, not to look like a phone. An attachment index at the back exists too, as a separate switch rather than part of the style.

A checksum on the output. The success screen shows a SHA256 of the finished file and writes it beside the export. That is not a magic evidence wand and this site is careful about saying so, which is the point of how to verify a PDF with SHA256 in 30 seconds: it proves the file has not changed since it was made, and nothing else.

The document’s language. The export can be produced in any of fourteen languages, from English, German, French and Spanish to Czech, Swedish, Ukrainian and Russian, with the front matter, dates and labels written in that language and the messages untouched. For an annex a judge has to read without a translator, that is the difference between an exhibit and a task. The program’s own interface, to be clear, is English and Polish only.

What is the same?

More than the marketing on either side would suggest.

Both read the message database out of an Apple backup, so neither is reconstructing your conversation from a picture of a screen, which is the real dividing line in this category and the reason the best iPhone message export software of 2026 is organised around it. Both open encrypted backups. Both export PDF and CSV. Both leave the phone alone once the backup exists. Both are one time purchases rather than subscriptions.

If someone tells you one of these products produces “more real” messages than the other, they are wrong. The rows in the database are the rows in the database.

What do the free versions give you?

Decipher’s trial shows “a few messages from each of your iPhone contacts”, with no number published. This program’s trial writes the 50 most recent messages and watermarks every page, while letting you preview the entire thread on screen first.

Both stop before you have a document you could file, which is the honest shape of this category. The difference is only that one of the two numbers is written down, and a limit you can plan around is worth more than a limit you discover.

When should you buy Decipher instead?

You are on a Mac. This program is Windows only, and that is not a soft limitation waiting to be fixed. Decipher runs on macOS and has for years.

You want the incumbent. A vendor that has been in business since 2010, by its own account, is itself a form of evidence, and if the document you are producing might be discussed by people who have heard of one of these two, that is a real consideration and not a silly one. This site would rather say that than pretend a 2026 product has the same track record.

Frequently asked questions

Is Decipher TextMessage still a one time purchase?

Yes. Checked on 4 August 2026, it is 29.99 USD, bought once, on their own download page. That matters more than it used to, because the best known program in this category, iMazing, moved to subscriptions in June 2025, which is the subject of the iMazing alternative for Windows.

Does Decipher handle WhatsApp?

Not in this product. Their WhatsApp tool, Decipher Chat, is sold separately. If your conversation is on WhatsApp rather than in Messages, that is two purchases from them and one from here.

Can either of them recover deleted messages?

Only from where they still exist. A backup is a copy of a moment, so a message deleted before that moment is not in the file. iOS 16 and later keep recently deleted messages recoverable for around thirty days, and a backup made inside that window still contains them. In this program, reading them is a switch that is off by default, so “entire conversation” means the thread as it stands rather than everything that ever passed through it.
